Artist's Note.
시간[時間] : 어떤 시각에서 시각까지의 사이.
우리는 시간이라는 환영을 마치 실존하는 사실처럼 인지한다. 작가는 이 거대한 환영 속에서 어떻게 살 것인가 라는 작가 스스로의 존재론적 질문에서부터 작업을 시작하였고 그 해답 역시 시간속에서 찾고자 한다.
작가는 우주론적 관점에서의 거시적인 시간성을 작가 자신의 경험으로 이끌어온다. 물리학의 일반상대성이론에서 거대한 중력은 주변의 시공간을 휘게 한다. 모두에게 동일 할 것 만 같은 시간과 공간이 왜곡된다는 사실은 쉽사리 받아들이기 어려울 것이다. 예를 하나 들어보자. 영화< 인터스텔라>에서 거대질량을 가진 블랙홀 가르강튀아 근처에 있는 밀러행성에서의 1시간이 지구에서는 7년이라는 이야기가 나오는데 이것은 지구와 가르강튀아 간 중력의 차이에 의해 발생하는 시간적 차이 이다. 여기서 우리가 알 수 있는 것은 우리가 인지하는 “24시간”은 우주 전체를 관통하는 시간이 아니라 930억 광년이라는 거대한 우주 속 우리 은하 변두리 태양계의 세 번째 행성, 이 창백한 푸른 점 지구에만 국한되는 시간이다. 이러한 사실은 작가로 하여금 시간의 속성에 대하여 고민해보는 기회로 다가왔고 이러한 시간을 작가는 어떻게 보내며 살아야 할지에 대한 삶의 전반적인 문제의식으로 번졌다.
작가는 우주의 거시적인 시간의 속성(거대한 중력을 가진 천체는 그 주변의 시공간을 왜곡시킨다.)을 주변의 상황들 속으로 끌어들인다. 작가에게 있어서 커피 잔은 마치 우주공간에서의 블랙홀과 같은 의미를 지닌다. 30ml의 아주 작은 용량의 에스프레소 한 잔을 통하여 여러 관계를 맺을 때 작가는 시간의 왜곡을 가장 크게 느낀다. 또한 한 점에 수렴할 만큼 부피는 작지만 거대한 질량을 가지고 있는 블랙홀처럼 작가의 에스프레소 잔은 30ml라는 용량에는 맞지 않는 파다한 작가의 기억들이 그 잔 안에 담겨있다. 작가에게 있어서 에스프레소 잔은 결국 블랙홀과 맞먹는 강한 중력을 가진 물체로 자리 잡힌 것이다.
작가는 이 에스프레소 잔을 활용하여 캐릭터를 만들어 낸다. 이의 이름은 이쿠푸[ICUPU]이며 I LOVE U에서 LOVE를 CUP으로 대체하여 지은 이름이다. 이는 작가의 시간의 길이를 관장하는 가상의 존재로 작가의 시간의 길이를 줄이고 늘이는 일들을 한다. 화면에서 보여 지는 면으로 표현된 이쿠푸와 선으로 표현된 이쿠푸 사이의 틀어짐은 우리가 알고 있는 지구에서의 시간과, 체감하는 왜곡되는 시간 사이의 간극을 나타낸다. 유사하지만 동일시되진 않고 그렇다고 별개로 볼 수는 없는 왜곡되는 시간 그 자체로서 의 조형적 표현인 것이다.
이러한 작가만의 세계관을 통하여 작가는 대중들에게 정해진 시간을 향유하는 것이 아닌 각자만의 시간을 살길 권유하고 그 속에서 스스로의 거대한 질량을 가진, 시간을 왜곡 시키는 의미있는 대상을 찾길 바란다. 작가와 같은 커피 잔일수도 혹은 사랑하는 사람 일수도 있는 그 무엇인가를.ﾠ
Time : Between a certain time and time.
We perceive the illusion of time as if it were a real fact. The artist started working with the artist's own ontological question of how to live in this huge illusion, and he also tries to find the answer in time.
The artist leads the macroscopic temporality from a cosmological point of view to the artist's own experience. In the general theory of relativity in physics, huge gravity bends the surrounding space-time. It would be difficult to accept the fact that time and space are distorted, which is likely to be the same for everyone. Let's give one example. In the movie Interstellar, there is a story that 1 hour on the Miller planet near Gargantua, a black hole with a huge mass, is 7 years on Earth, which is the time difference caused by the difference in gravity between the Earth and Gargantua. What we know here is that the "24 hours" we perceive is not the time that passes through the entire universe, but is limited to 93 billion light years, the third planet of the Milky Way's fringe solar system, this pale blue dot Earth. This fact has come as an opportunity for the artist to think about the nature of time, and this time has turned into an overall problem consciousness of how he should spend and live.
The artist draws the macroscopic nature of time in the universe (a celestial body with enormous gravity distorts the space-time around it). For the artist, a coffee cup means like a black hole in outer space. Through a very small cup of espresso in 30ml, the artist feels the distortion of time the most when several relationships are made. Also, like a black hole that is small enough to converge at a point, the artist's espresso cup contains memories of a broad artist that do not fit the 30ml capacity. For the artist, an espresso cup is eventually established as an object with strong gravity equivalent to a black hole.
The artist creates a character using this espresso cup. Its name is Ikupu [ICUPU], and it was named by replacing LOVE with CUP in I LOVE U. This is a virtual being in charge of the length of the artist's time, and they reduce and increase the length of the artist's time. The distortion between Ikupu expressed in the face shown on the screen and Ikupu expressed in the line represents the gap between the time on Earth as we know it and the distorted time we feel. It is a formative expression of distorted time itself, which is similar, but not identified and cannot be viewed separately.
Through this world view of the artist, the artist encourages the public to live their own time rather than enjoying the set time, and hopes to find a meaningful object that distorts time with its own enormous mass. Something that could be a coffee cup like the artist or a loved one. ﾠ
