Artist's Note.
인간은 본능적으로 자신만의 자리를 찾습니다. 이 자리는 개인적 공간이든 공공장소든 관계없이, 누군가가 앉아 있는 동안에는 그 자리를 함부로 침범할 수 없습니다. 이러한 관점에서 의자는 우리의 정체성과 관계를 담아내는 중요한 매개체로 기능합니다.
각자에게는 ‘나의 의자’가 존재합니다. 저에게는 아르네 야곱센의 '다리가 세 개인 앤트체어'가 그러합니다. 이 의자는 처음에는 다리가 세 개로 설계되었으나, 여러가지 이유로 다리가 네 개로 변경되어 대중의 사랑을 받게 되었습니다. 다양한 이유 중 낯설다는 이유는 익숙하지 않은 것에 대한 두려움과 사회적 수용의 과정을 상징적으로 보여주며, 우리 모두가 다수와 소수의 경계에서 살아가고 있음을 일깨워 줍니다.
대다수의 삶은 사회적 규범과 기대를 따르며 안정성을 제공합니다. 반면, 소수의 삶은 독창성과 개별적인 정체성을 탐구하는 기회를 제공합니다. 이 두 선택은 서로 대립되는 것이 아니라, 사실상 상호 보완적입니다. 우리는 각자의 선택 속에서 서로 다른 존재로서 함께 살아가고 있습니다.
제 작품은 이러한 다수와 소수의 관계를 탐구하며, 우리가 어떻게 서로 연결되고, 다름이 어떻게 조화롭게 어우러질 수 있는지를 보여주고자 합니다. 의자는 단순한 도구가 아니라, 우리의 경험과 감정을 나누는 공간으로서, 공존의 의미를 담고 있으며, 이 작품을 통해 우리는 서로의 존재를 이해하고 존중하는 시각적 자극을 주고자 합니다.
결국, 우리는 다수와 소수가 공존하는 사회 속에서 서로의 차이를 인정하고 그 안에서 조화를 이루어가야 합니다. 이러한 탐구가 우리 모두에게 더 깊은 이해와 공감을 제공하길 바랍니다.
Humans instinctively seek out their own space. Whether in private or public spaces, no one can invade that space while it is occupied. From this perspective, the chair serves as an important medium that reflects our identity and relationships.
Everyone has their "own chair." For me, it's Arne Jacobsen's 'Ant Chair with Three Legs.' Initially designed with three legs, the chair was later modified to have four legs for various reasons, ultimately gaining public admiration. Among these reasons, the feeling of unfamiliarity symbolizes the fear of the unknown and the process of social acceptance, reminding us that we all live on the boundary between the majority and the minority.
The lives of the majority follow social norms and expectations, offering stability. In contrast, the lives of the minority provide opportunities to explore individuality and unique identity. These two choices are not opposites but, in fact, complementary. In our respective choices, we live together as different beings.
My work explores the relationship between the majority and the minority, aiming to show how we are interconnected and how differences can harmoniously blend. A chair is not just a simple tool but a space where we share our experiences and emotions, representing coexistence. Through this work, I seek to visually stimulate understanding and respect for each other's existence.
Ultimately, in a society where the majority and minority coexist, we must acknowledge differences and find harmony within them. I hope this exploration provides us all with a deeper sense of understanding and empathy
