Artist's Note.
sea the wall 연작은 바다의 벽, 벽을 보다, 라고 해석할 수 있는 다중적인 의미를 가진다. 바다는 오랜 시간 동안 인류의 삶의 영유할 수 있는 수렵과 채집이 이뤄지는 생존의 공간이었다. 시간이 지나 잉여생산물로 인해 무역이 발달하고, 배가 만들어지면서 인류는 바다 넘어 새로운 대륙을 정복하고 싶은 욕망이 생겨났다. 시간이 지나 무역이 발달하고, 배가 만들어지면서 인간은 바다를 넘어 새로운 대륙을 정복하고 싶은 욕망이 생겼는데, 그 인간의 욕망을 가로막는 것은 바다라는 거대한 장벽이었다. 끊임없이 거대한 장벽에 도전한 결과, 인간은 풍요로움을 얻었지만 아이러니하게도 환경파괴와 기상이변이라는 재난에 직면하게 되었다.
인간의 욕망이라는 못이 바다라는 거대한 장벽에 틈을 만들었고, 틈에서 흘러나온 바다의 힘과 마주하게 된 것이다. 거대한 벽면 속 바다와 파도의 이미지들은 자연 상태 그대로인 바다의 시각적인 아름다움과 균형을 상징함과 동시에 언제라도 인류를 덮칠 수 있는 재난을 상징한다. 브루탈리즘,미니멀리즘의 형태의 건축물은 생존을 위해 반드시 필요한 요소이지만, 그것을 만들기 위해서는 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 자연을 파괴해야 한다는 양면성을 가진다.
나에게 있어 바다는 공포와 편안함의 공간이다. 물에 빠져 죽을 뻔한 죽음의 공간이자 멀리서 바다를 관망하며 안식을 얻는 경험을 가지고 있다. sea the wall 작품 속에 등장하는 인물은 나를 의미하기도, 우리를 의미하기도 한다. 나는 작품을 통해 바다를 직접 마주하며 공포를 극복하고 그 과정속에서의 편안함을 찾고 있다. 작품 앞에 선 인물이 느끼는 감정은 각자의 바다의 기억에 따라 감상 될 것이다.
과학자들과 전문가들이 미디어에서 지구온난화와 기후변화에 경고하는 모습들을 본 적이 한 번쯤은 있을 것이다. 우리 앞에 예정된 재난을 보여주는 TV와 영화에서의 인간은 무기력하고 나약하기만 하다.
우리들이 할 수 있는 것은 무엇이며, 어떻게 해야 할 것인가

The "Sea the Wall" series carries multiple interpretations, including "the wall of the sea" and "to see the wall." For centuries, the sea has been a space of survival for humanity, where hunting and gathering took place. Over time, with the surplus of goods, trade developed, and ships were created, igniting humanity's desire to conquer new continents beyond the sea. However, what stood in the way of this desire was the immense barrier of the sea itself. As humanity continually challenged this vast wall, they gained prosperity but also, ironically, faced environmental destruction and climate disasters.
The nail of human desire created cracks in the great wall of the sea, and through these cracks, we encountered the powerful force of the ocean. The images of the sea and waves on these immense walls symbolize both the visual beauty and balance of the sea in its natural state and the impending disaster that could strike humanity at any moment. Brutalist and minimalist architectural forms represent essential survival elements, yet their creation comes at the cost of destroying the natural world around us, highlighting a duality.
For me, the sea is a space of both fear and comfort. It is a place where I nearly drowned, representing death, yet it also offers peace when viewed from afar. The figures in the "Sea the Wall" works symbolize both myself and all of us. Through my art, I confront the sea, overcome my fears, and find peace in the process. The emotions of those who stand before the work will reflect their own personal memories of the sea.
We have all likely seen scientists and experts on media platforms warning about global warming and climate change. In TV and movies that depict the disasters awaiting us, humanity often appears powerless and fragile.
So, what can we do, and how should we act?

Artist's Note
The "Sea the Wall" series carries a multilayered meaning that can be interpreted as "the wall of the sea" or "to see the wall." Throughout history, the sea has been a space where humanity has relied on hunting and gathering for survival. As time passed, surplus production led to the development of trade, and with the invention of ships, humanity became eager to conquer new continents beyond the sea. However, the immense barrier of the sea stood in the way of this desire. While humanity's continuous challenges to this vast barrier have resulted in prosperity, it has also ironically brought about environmental destruction and climate disasters.
Human desire, like a nail, created cracks in the massive wall of the sea, and through those cracks, we came face to face with the power of the ocean. The images of the sea and waves on these immense walls symbolize both the visual beauty and balance of the sea in its natural state, as well as the looming disaster that could strike humanity at any moment. Brutalism and minimalism in architecture represent essential elements for survival, yet their creation requires the destruction of the very nature that surrounds us—highlighting a duality.
For me, the sea is both a space of fear and comfort. Having nearly drowned, it represents a place of death, yet observing the sea from afar brings me peace. The figures in the "Sea the Wall" pieces symbolize either myself or all of us. Through this work, I confront the sea, overcoming my fears while seeking comfort in the process. The emotions felt by the person standing in front of these works will vary, depending on their personal memories of the sea.
We’ve all seen scientists and experts on media platforms warning about global warming and climate change. In movies and on TV, when confronted with imminent disaster, humanity appears powerless and fragile.
