Artist's Note.
<Genesis>
태초의 자연 그대로의 모습을 갈구하는 마음은 인간 본연의 마음속 깊은 곳에 내재되어 있다.
일상과 도시의 삶에서 보다 우리가 살아있다고 느끼는 것은 자연속에 있을 때다.
지난해 지구종말의 시계가 100초 전에서 90초 전으로 앞당겨졌다고 한다. 현 시대의 자연은 핵 위협, 기후변화, 인공지능, 생명공학의 오용과 같은 환경들 속에서 점차 본래의 모습을 잃어가 인간이 그토록 원하는 존재 자체의 아름다움과는 많은 거리를 두고 있다. 어쩌면 지구는 언젠가는 모든 아름다움이 사라질지 모른다는 두려움을 견디고 있을지 모른다.
우리가 보지 못한 태초의 자연은 어떤 모습을 가지고 있었을까? 눈부신 대자연의 모습을 투영하고 빛나는 그 중심에 왕관을 조심스럽게 내려놓는다.
왕관은 아름다운 자연속에서 그 무엇보다도 빛나게 만들어진 우리들 자신이다.
왕관은 전통적으로 권위와 통치의 상징이지만, 이데아적 의미에서 나의 왕관은 스스로에 대한 존중과 자긍심을 나타낸다. 인생 여정을 돌아보며 나에게 바치는 왕관은 단순히 금과 보석으로 꾸며진 장식품이 아니다. 이는 내가 살아온 모든 순간들, 모든 도전과 극복의 과정을 인정하고 그 가치를 부여하는 상징이다. 이는 자신에게 부여하는 최고의 찬사이며, 인생 여정을 기념하는 가장 순수한 형태의 집합체이다. 이 왕관을 통해 자신을 존중하고, 나의 삶의 모든 순간들을 기리며, 앞으로 나아갈 힘을 얻는다. 주위에 찬란하게 반짝이는 빛의 조각들은 언제나 우리를 지켜주고 앞길을 밝게 비춰주는 존재처럼 느껴진다.
현대 사회에 물들어진 우리는 사회가 요구하는 기대속에 항상 지쳐 있다.
우리에게 요구되어지는 모든 것들을 잠시 내려 놓고 태초의 자연 그대로의 모습 속에서 나를 찾아본다. 있는 그대로의 정체성 그 아름다운 모습을 바라보고 지켜주자. 그리고 스스로 빛나는 존재인 우리에게 왕관을 씌우자. 아름답게 빛나고 있는 현재를 충분히 인정해 주기를.
바쁘게 돌아가는 일상 속에서도 우리 안에는 스스로가 빛나는 존재라는 것을 일깨워 주는 각자의 왕관이 있다는 것을 잊지 않기를 바란다.
<흘러간다, 찬란히>
추억은 아름답게 기억된다. 흘러온 삶 속에는 어두웠던 길도 밝았던 길도 모두 존재했지만, 돌이켜보면 그 모든 순간들이 기억 속에서 빛나고 있다. 이처럼 과거로부터 걸어온 수많은 날들이 쌓여 지금의 당신을 오롯이 빛나게 한다.
바닥에서부터 차곡차곡 어두운 색부터 쌓아간다. 어두운 색부터 밝은 색까지 서서히 겹쳐 쌓아가야 깊이가 표현되고 이것은 우리의 삶과 닮아 있다. 어두움이 있어야 밝음이 비로소 드러나게 된다. 한줄 한줄 쌓아올린 수많은 길들이 모여 하나의 계절을 만들고 추억이 되어진다.
지금도 우리가 모르는 사이에 찬란히 빛나는 순간을 지나고 있다. 지나고 보면 반짝였던 나의 날들, 이 모든 순간을 살아가는 당신은 눈부시다 라는 메시지를 주고 싶다.
어둠이 짙게 깔릴수록 왕관은 더 밝은 빛을 드러낸다. 이 왕관은 힘들었던 순간, 밝았던 순간, 모든 순간을 묵묵히 걸어온 당신에게 바치는 왕관이다. 진한 향기를 품은 꽃처럼 아름다운 향기를 남기는 삶의 왕관이 되기를.. 그리고 이 빛나는 왕관처럼 앞으로의 당신의 추억도 빛으로 찬란히 흘러가기를 바란다.

-빛의 현현(顯現), 찬란한 순간

“신예진의 왕관은 사랑이다. 왕관을 빛나게 하는 것은 우리 삶, 그 자체이기 때문이다.” 왕관(王冠)의 사전적 의미는 “임금이 머리에 쓰는 관, 존엄하거나 고귀한 표상으로 머리에 쓰는 관”이라고 명명한다.
“왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라”라는 말과도 연계된다. 어마어마한 보석을 담은 왕관의 자리엔 아름다움을 뛰어넘는 책임과 의무가 자리한다. 우리는 삶의 무게를 견디며 척박한 삶을 극복한 채 살아간다.
작가는 반짝이는 외연(권위)보다 우리가 견뎌온 삶의 의미를 ‘왕관’으로 녹여내어, “희로애락의 모든 순간을 견뎌낸 우리 모두”에게 선물 같은 미감을 선사한다. 그림 속 왕관은 물빛을 따라 흐른다. 반사된 빛의 확산은 찬란한 삶이 되기를 바라는 은유의 표현이다. 삶의 다채로움을 선사하는 ‘왕관 시리즈’는 물의 흐름을 배경 삼는 이전 작품들의 연장선상에서 이해해야 한다.
작가가 추구하는 것은 ‘이성과 감성의 조화’다. ‘최상의 아름다움=왕관’이 자연 속에 자리한다는 것, 이는 자신의 오늘을 반추해 진정한 자유를 찾으라는 메시지와 상통한다. 작품의 매력은 이면 공간까지 파고들어 ‘왕관의 심층구조’를 드러내는 ‘확장된 거울효과(Expansion of the mirror effect)’에 있다.
거울이 빛의 반사와 투영 효과를 빚는다면, 물은 빛의 굴절과 통과까지 끌어안는 ‘가능성의 영역’이기 때문이다. 그래서 신예진의 왕관은 개별적으로 실재하면서도 상대적으로 무한한 자유를 끌어안는 매력 넘치는 대상으로 기능한다. 작품들은 독립된 개별로서 끝나지 않고 궁금증을 불어넣는 창의성으로 이어진다.
<Genesis>
The longing for the original state of nature is inherently embedded deep within the human spirit.
We feel most alive when we are in nature, away from the mundane and urban life.
Last year, it was reported that the Doomsday Clock moved forward from 100 seconds to 90 seconds to midnight. In the current era, nature is gradually losing its original form amidst environments such as nuclear threats, climate change, the misuse of artificial intelligence, and biotechnology, distancing itself from the beauty of existence that humanity yearns for. Perhaps the Earth is enduring the fear that all beauty may someday vanish.
What did the original nature, which we have not seen, look like? I carefully place a crown at the center, reflecting the dazzling beauty of nature.
The crown represents ourselves, made to shine brighter than anything in beautiful nature.
Traditionally, a crown symbolizes authority and sovereignty, but in an ideal sense, my crown represents respect and pride in oneself. Looking back on my life journey, the crown I dedicate to myself is not merely a decorative piece adorned with gold and jewels. It symbolizes the recognition of all the moments I have lived through, every challenge faced, and the value assigned to them. It is the highest praise I can give myself, a pure collection that commemorates my life's journey. Through this crown, I honor myself, celebrate every moment of my life, and gain the strength to move forward. The sparkling shards of light around us always feel like guardians, illuminating our paths ahead.
In a society tainted by modernity, we are constantly exhausted by the expectations placed upon us.
Let’s momentarily set down all that is demanded of us and seek ourselves in the unadulterated image of primordial nature. Let us cherish our true identities and their beautiful forms as they are. And let us adorn ourselves with crowns, for we are radiant beings. I hope we can fully acknowledge our beautiful, shining present.
Amidst the busy rhythms of life, I wish for you to remember that each of us carries our own crown, reminding us that we are beings of light.
<Flowing, Radiantly>
Memories are beautifully recalled. Throughout our lives, there have been both dark and bright paths, yet when we look back, all those moments shine within our memories. In this way, the countless days we have walked from the past come together to make you shine completely.
From the ground up, dark colors are stacked carefully. Gradually layering from dark to bright colors is necessary to express depth, reflecting our lives. Without darkness, brightness cannot truly be revealed. The countless paths built up, one line at a time, create a single season and become memories.
Even now, we are passing through moments that shine brilliantly, unbeknownst to us. I want to convey the message that your days, which sparkled in the past, make you radiant as you live each moment.
The darker the surroundings, the more brightly the crown reveals its light. This crown is dedicated to you, who have silently walked through every difficult and bright moment. I hope it becomes a crown of life, leaving a beautiful fragrance like a flower with a rich scent. And I hope that your future memories, like this shining crown, flow brightly with light.

-The Manifestation of Light, Radiant Moments

“Shin Ye-jin's crown is love. What makes the crown shine is our life itself.” The dictionary definition of a crown is “a headpiece worn by a king, a symbol of dignity or nobility.”
It resonates with the saying, “Those who seek to wear a crown must endure its weight.” The place of a crown adorned with immense jewels carries responsibilities and obligations that transcend beauty. We live by enduring the weight of life and overcoming harsh realities.
The artist encapsulates the meaning of the lives we have endured into the 'crown,' gifting us with a sensory experience that feels like a present for “all of us who have endured the moments of joy and sorrow.” The crown in the painting flows with the water's hue. The diffusion of reflected light is a metaphorical expression wishing for a radiant life. The ‘Crown Series,’ which offers the richness of life, should be understood as a continuation of previous works that use the flow of water as a backdrop.
What the artist pursues is the harmony of reason and emotion. The ‘ultimate beauty = crown’ is found within nature, which echoes the message of finding true freedom by reflecting on one’s today.
The charm of the works lies in penetrating even the underlying space to reveal the 'deep structure of the crown' through the 'expansion of the mirror effect.'
If a mirror creates reflections and projection effects, water embraces the 'realm of possibilities' through refraction and passage of light. Therefore, Shin Ye-jin's crown functions as an attractive object that embodies individual reality while also embracing infinite freedom. The works do not end as independent entities but rather continue to inspire curiosity, leading to creativity.
