잠시, 행복

코로나 이후는 ‘불안의 시대’라고 말할 만큼 ‘불안’은 우리에게 거의 일상적인 개념이 되었다. 크게는 자연재해나 코로나19와 같이 우리의 생명조차 위협하는 재난적 상황이, 작게는 자신의 삶을 스스로 책임져야 한다는 점이 우리를 불안하게 한다. 자본주의 사회에서 양자는 우열을 가릴 수 없이 우리를 억누른다. 철학자, 알랭 드 보통(Alain de Botton, 1969∼ )은 『불안』에서 불안이 생기는 원인을 사랑결핍, 속물근성, 기대, 능력주의, 불확실성 등 다섯 가지로 분류하면서, 우리의 삶은 불안을 떨쳐내는가 하면, 새로운 불안을 맞아들이고, 또다시 그것을 떨쳐내는 과정의 연속이라고 말한다. 또 슬로베니아의 철학자, 레나타 살레츨(Renata Salecl, 1962∼ )은 현대인의 불안은 공포와 연관된 감정이기보다는 제약없는 자유와 많은 선택의 기회 앞에서 심리적으로 마비되는 정신장애에 가까운 것으로, 불안을 부축이는 여러 대중 매체들로 인해 불안은 끊임없이 재생산된다고 말한다. 현대는 사회적 규제가 약해지고 개인의 자유가 늘어났음에도, 개인은 자신과 타인, 집단과의 관계 속에서 고독, 절망, 불안감을 떨쳐내지 못하고 있다. 이처럼, 우리 시대의 불안은 주체의 행복은 물론이요, 더 나아가 생명까지 위협하는 문제이다. 그런데 첨단 과학시대에도, 이를 제거하거나 해소하기 위한 약이나 보험 등이 상품화되고 있지만, 여전히 극복되지 못해, 지금같이 기층문화로 여전히 존재하는 부적을 보면, 전통적인 주술을 통해 마음의 안정을 도모하려는 사람들이 여전히 상당히 많음을 보여준다.
본인의 작품은, 이러한 불안의 해결책으로 고대 공동체부터 오랜 역사 체험 속에 축적된 전통적인 기반 위에 뿌리를 둔 하나의 시도이다. 이전에는 한국 고대신화에 나타나는 꽃을 소재로 모성성母性性을 시각화한 작업을 하였지만, 두 아이의 조산이라는 예기치 않은 경험으로 2019년 시점부터 부적에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 그 이후 아이들을 양육하면서 ‘불안’이라는 우리 시대의 정서에 주목하게 되었다. 대중 매체들이 끊임없이 우리의 행동에 의문을 품게 하고, 그 염려가 더욱더 불안을 가중시킴을 보면서 우리의 조상들은 어떠했을까를 생각하며 우리 전통에 대한 관심이 더 배가되었다.
본인의 작품은 이렇게 일상적으로 생기는 자신과 가족의 안녕에 대한 걱정과 불안을 부적에서의 보편적 상징성을 지닌 그림ㆍ문자ㆍ기호를 차용하여 그 의미를 다시 생각해보려는 시도이다. 무속에서 사용되는 ‘설위설경設位說經’의 ‘종이 바수기(종이 오리기)’ 제작 방법에서 비롯된 대칭적 구도와 음양오행陰陽五行 사상을 담은 오방색의 조합이 우리에게 정서적 균형과 안정감을 주는 한편, 종이오리기에서의 정신 집중은 오리기 대상과 하나가 되어 오히려 마음의 평정이 찾아왔다.
이렇듯이, 본인은 전통적인 기원문화의 ‘부적’, ‘설위설경’, ‘지화紙花’ 등을 예술적 도구로 차용하면서, 우리 전래의 보편적 상징성과 대칭 구도, 오방색의 조화로움이 오히려 예측 불가능한 불안의 시대를 사는 본인을 비롯한 현대인들의 삶을 위로하며 심리적 안정감을 얻게 한다는 사실을 인식하고 그 차용의 폭과 그 해석을 확대함으로써 우리 조상의 마음을 알게 된 동시에 평온을 찾게 되었다. 그렇게 현대의 삶은 또 지속되고 있다.

After COVID-19, "anxiety" has become an almost everyday concept for us to say that it is an era of anxiety. We are anxious that catastrophic situations that threaten our lives, such as natural disasters and COVID-19, have to take responsibility for themselves, to a small extent. In a capitalist society, both sides suppress us regardless of our superiority and inferiority. The philosopher Alain de Boton (born 1969) classifies the causes of anxiety in "Anxiety" into five categories: love deprivation, snobbery, expectation, meritocracy, and uncertainty, saying that our lives are a continuation of the process of shaking off anxiety, facing new anxiety, and then shaking it off again. Renata Salecl (born 1962), a Slovenian philosopher, says that anxiety in modern times is more of a mental disorder that is psychologically paralyzed in the face of unrestrained freedom and many opportunities for choice rather than an emotion related to fear, and that anxiety is constantly reproduced by various mass media that help them. In modern times, even though social regulations have weakened and individual freedom has increased, individuals are unable to shake off feelings of loneliness, despair, and anxiety in their relationships with themselves, others, and groups. In this way, anxiety in our time threatens not only the happiness of the subject but also life. However, even in the age of advanced science, drugs and insurance to remove or relieve them are commercialized, but they are still not overcome, and the talisman that still exists as a basic culture shows that there are still quite a few people who are trying to stabilize their minds through traditional magic.
My work is an attempt based on the traditional foundation accumulated in long historical experiences from ancient communities as a solution to this anxiety. Previously, I was working on visualizing maternal instinct based on flowers that appear in ancient Korean myths, but due to the unexpected experience of premature birth of two children, I became interested in talismans from 2019, and since then, as I raised my children, I have paid attention to the emotion of our time called 'anxiety'. As the mass media constantly questioned our actions and the concern added to our anxiety, I thought about what our ancestors were like, and my interest in our tradition doubled.
His work is an attempt to rethink the meaning of this everyday concern and anxiety about the well-being of himself and his family by borrowing pictures, letters, and symbols with universal symbolism in talisman. The combination of symmetrical composition derived from the method of making "paper basugi (paper origami)" of the "Sulhuiseolgyeong 設位說 Sutra" used in shamanism gives us emotional balance and stability, while the concentration of the mind in the paper originated from the object of origin and came to peace of mind.
In this way, by using traditional origin culture's wealth, Seolwi Seolgyeong, and Jihwa 紙 as artistic tools, I realized that the universal symbolism, symmetrical composition, and harmony of the five colors rather comfort the lives of modern people, including myself, living in an era of unpredictable anxiety, and gained a sense of psychological stability. By expanding the breadth of the borrowing and its interpretation, I learned about our ancestors' hearts and found peace. Modern life continues like that.
