Artist's Note.
장인적 고집으로 기예에 속박되지 않는 유려함을 가지면서도 우리 전통의 엄격한 절제와 팽팽한 긴장감을 놓치지 않으려는 나의 미적 사유는 옻칠을 재료로 한 회화적 도전으로 점철된다. 칠 흙이 가지는 고독한 숭고함이 미술이 가지는 자유로운 색채와 만나면 감각적인 텍스처(Texture)의 생명력이 탄생하고 고통 속에서 잉태된 작가 내면의 미의식(아름다움)이 세상 밖으로 태동하게 된다. 흔히 말하는 그 ‘전통’이라는 진부함에 ‘현재’라는 들숨을 불어넣고 ‘혁신’이라는 날숨을 기다리는 것이다. 들숨과 날숨, 과거와 현재, 동양과 서양, 전통과 현대의 조화는 내 그림의 철학적 사유와 가치의 기반이 된다.
나는 작년쯤인가부터 ‘무릉도원’이라는 주제로 작업을 하고 있는데 코로나 이후 너무 어렵고 팍팍해진 삶 속에 힘들고 지쳐 있는 우리에게 잠시나마 세상 시름을 잊고 힐링 할 수 있는 휴식의 공간, 상상의 나래를 펼치고 다시 자신의 꿈을 향해 힘차게 도움닫기 할 수 있는 희망과 치유의 상상적 공간을 만들어주고 싶다는 작가적 염원으로 무릉도원(이상향)이라는 선조들의 지혜를 주제로 가지고 왔다. 인간이 꿈꾸는 천국과 같은 곳을 동양에서는 '무릉도원(武陵桃源)‘ 혹은 '도원경(桃源境)'이라고 하는데 산수는 단순히 산과 물 이상의 의미가 있다. 동양에서 산수는 어지러운 속세와 대비되어 신선(神仙)이 사는 이상향을 상징하고 있다. 작품 속 우아하지만 무심한 듯 바라보는 여인의 시선 너머로 동양적 사유의 공간인 무릉도원(이상향)이 존재한다. 동양적 사유의 방식인 마음이 인식의 주체가 되는 심상으로 무릉도원의 세계를 바라보면 그 매혹적인 풍광 안으로 미끄러지듯 빠져들게 된다.
미국 현대 미술가인 에드워드 호퍼(Edward Hopper)는 '어떠한 능숙한 발명도 상상력이라는 필수 요소를 대체할 수는 없다'라고 하였다. 모든 것이 너무나 빠르게 지나가고 그 빠른 시간을 따라잡기에 상상할 수 있는 시간이 점점 부족해지는 이때, 현실과 상상을 구분하지 못하는 사람은 없을 것이지만, 지금의 이 작품을 바라보는 순간만큼은 우리 모두 장자의 '호접몽(胡蝶夢)'처럼 대상의 내부와 외부를 구별하는 눈앞의 경계를 관념 속으로 사라지게 하고 자신이 상상하던 내면의 아름다움과 만나보는 꿈같은 시간이 되기를 바란다.

My aesthetic thinking, which does not want to lose sight of the strict moderation and tight tension of our tradition while having the grace of not being bound by artisanal stubbornness, is marked by a painting challenge made of lacquer. When the lonely sublime of the paint soil meets the free colors of the art, the vitality of the sensuous texture is born, and the artist's inner aesthetic (beauty) conceived in pain is born out of the world. It breathes in the present to the cliché of "tradition" and waits for the breath of "innovation." Inhale and exhale, past and present, Eastern and Western, and traditional and modern harmony are the basis of the philosophical thinking and values of my painting.
I've been working on the theme of "Mureung Dowon" since around last year, and I brought the wisdom of my ancestors called Mureung Dowon with the artist's desire to create a space of rest where we can forget about the world for a moment and heal, a space of hope to spread our imagination, and an imaginary space of healing to help us reach our dreams again. Places like human-dreaming heaven are called "陵桃源" or "桃源境" in the East, and arithmetic is more than just mountains and water. In the East, arithmetic symbolizes the ideal direction where a god 仙 lives in contrast to the dizzy world. Mureung Dowon (Odeanghyang), a space of oriental thinking, exists beyond the gaze of the woman who looks elegant but indifferently in the work. Looking at the world of Mureung Dowon as an image in which the mind, an oriental way of thinking, becomes the subject of perception, glides into the fascinating scenery.
Edward Hopper, an American contemporary artist, said, "No skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination." At a time when everything is passing by too quickly and there is increasingly little time to imagine to catch up with that fast time, no one can distinguish reality from imagination, but I hope that the moment we look at this work, like Zhangzi's "胡蝶夢," will make the boundary in front of our eyes that distinguish the inside and the outside of the object disappear into the idea and be a dream-like time to meet the inner beauty of our imagination.
