Secret Within Beauty
멀리서 바라보면 아름답고 화려한 레이스가 실제인 것처럼 보이지만, 가까이 다가가 살펴볼수록 아름다움과 상반되는 스토리들이 레이스 문양으로 어우러져 회화로 표현되고 있음을 알게 된다. 우리의 진짜의 모습은 겉으로 보이는 것이 전부가 아니라 가까이 들여다보아야 자세히 알 수 있듯, 진실은 깊숙한 내면에 존재하는 것처럼 말이다. 여기서 레이스는 안의 문양으로 표현된 반전의 스토리를 감추기 위한 포장의 매개이며 허상을 실제처럼 착각하게 하는 하나의 도구로써 사용된다.
가까이서 본 레이스 문양의 스토리는 겉으로 들어 내지 못하는 또는 숨겨져 있는 인간의 불안을 시각화한 것이다. (내면의 무의식은 마치 영원히 풀리지 않을 것 같은 엉킨 실처럼 자리하는데, 그 보이지 않는 추상의 것은 무엇인지 이미지로 풀어 정리해가는)
'나의 이야기'에서 (팬데믹(pandemic)시대에 많은 것을 잃고, 세상의 예기치 못한 변수 속 인간의 무기력해짐과 처절한 몸부림으로 살아내야만 하는) '우리들의 이야기'까지... 개인적 서사에서 출발하여 우리의 모습과 사회, 세상의 이야기로 확장하여 레이스에 치환하는 이야기방식이다. 천속에 스토리를 서사적으로 또는 파편적으로 나열하듯_ 하지만 불안을 드러내지 않고 무늬로 포장하여(가려서) 표현을 했다면, 최근에는 ‘공간, 상황 속’의 불안을 시각화하기 위해 화면을 확장하고 변형하여 평면을 입체처럼 보이게 하는 작업으로 이어지고 있다.
이처럼 반전의 스토리, 평면-입체 시각적 반전은 다소 무거워 질수 있는 주제에 대해 관객들로 하여금 시각적 즐거움을 주기위한 의도이자 주제를 더 극대화시키기 위한 중요한 요소이다.
나의 작업은 오래전 바느질을 하면서 반복적 행위로 정신적 고통을 이겨냈던 경혐을 뿌리에 두고 있다. 바늘대신 세필로, 실 대신 호분으로, 천 위가 아닌 한지 위에 터치를 쌓아 레이스를 회화로 표현한다.
‘호분’이라는 재료는 한 터치 한 터치마다 시간을 두고 색이 올라오는 특성으로 기다림과 인내가 필요한 재료이다. 세필을 이용한 작은 터치로 그려지는 과정 역시 마찬가지이다. 작업의 표현방식에서 터치의 반복은 현실의 심적 고통을 잊게 하고, 마음을 비우게 하는 수행이자 자신의 한계를 이겨내 보고자하는 행위이다. 마음을 비우기까지의 그 작업 과정은 많은 인내와 노력, 육체적 고통이 따르는데 -고통 없는 성숙한 삶은 없듯- 나는 그것을 묵묵히 받아들인다. 한 땀 한 땀 작은 터치가 큰 화폭을 메워 아름다운 결과물을 만들어 내는 이 과정은 인내와 노고가 깃들어 있기에 반복적 노동의 가치가 더 아름답고 감동으로 다가오는 것이 아닌지 생각을 해본다.
우리의 삶이 마라톤을 완주하는 긴 race와 같듯이, lace를 완성하기까지의 (작업)과정 또한 우리의 긴 삶의 여정을 몸소 재현하는 것과 같다. 이 과정들은 모두 긴 시간을 두고 결국 자신에게 맞는 페이스를 찾아간다. 넘어지고 부딪히고 깨지면서, 배우고 깨달음을 얻으며 인간이 가질 수 있는 모든 감정을 느끼면서 말이다.
살아가는 과정에 있어 시련과 고비가 늘 있기에 그것을 극복한 우리의 삶이 더 아름다울 수 있는 것이 아닐까. 찢어지고 구멍이 나도 아름다운 레이스처럼.

Secret Within Beauty
From a distance, lace appears beautiful and ornate, seemingly real. However, upon closer inspection, one discovers that the intricate lace patterns are interwoven with stories that contrast sharply with its external beauty—stories visually expressed through painting. Just as our true selves are not solely defined by what is visible on the surface but require a closer look to be fully understood, truth exists deep within. Here, lace serves as a medium of concealment, a decorative facade that masks the underlying narrative and tricks the eye into mistaking illusion for reality.
The stories embedded in the lace patterns represent human anxieties—those invisible or unspoken fears that remain hidden beneath the surface. (Our unconscious mind often exists like a tangled thread, seemingly impossible to unravel, and I attempt to visually articulate and organize these abstract and unseen emotions.)
My narrative begins with "my story"—the personal struggles and losses experienced during the pandemic era, the unforeseen disruptions of the world, and the helplessness and desperate resilience required to survive. It then expands into "our story", reflecting our shared human experience, society, and the broader world, all translated into the language of lace. Like a fabric woven with a sequence of fragmented or linear narratives, my early works concealed anxiety behind decorative patterns rather than exposing it directly. However, my recent works have evolved towards visualizing anxiety within space and situations, expanding and transforming the canvas to create an illusion of three-dimensionality.
This visual reversal—where the hidden narrative unfolds and the interplay between two-dimensional and three-dimensional perspectives emerges—serves both as a means to provide visual delight and as a crucial tool to intensify the underlying themes, which might otherwise feel heavy.
My work is rooted in a personal experience: years ago, I overcame emotional distress through the repetitive act of sewing. Today, instead of using a needle, I use a fine brush; instead of thread, I use white pigment (ho-bun); and instead of fabric, I build delicate layers of paint upon hanji (Korean traditional paper), transforming lace into painting.
The material ho-bun has a unique characteristic—it requires patience, as each stroke develops its color gradually over time. Similarly, the process of painting with fine brushstrokes demands endurance. The repetitive nature of these strokes not only distracts from psychological burdens but also serves as a meditative practice—an act of overcoming personal limitations. The journey of emptying one's mind requires immense patience, effort, and even physical pain. Yet, just as there is no growth without hardship, I embrace this process with quiet acceptance. Each meticulous brushstroke accumulates to fill a vast canvas, resulting in a beautiful outcome. The persistence and labor poured into this repetition imbue the final work with a deeper sense of meaning, making the act of endurance itself a source of beauty and profound emotion.
Just as life is a long race—a marathon to be completed—the process of creating lace-like paintings mirrors our long journey through life. Over time, we naturally find our own pace. We stumble, collide, and break, only to learn, gain insight, and experience the full spectrum of human emotions.
Perhaps it is precisely because life presents us with constant trials and challenges that overcoming them makes our journey even more beautiful. Just like lace—torn, frayed, and punctured—our lives remain beautiful despite their imperfections.
