Artist's Note.
Monologue
작품 속 말은 내가 갈망하는 자유의 상징이다. 많은 이들이 말의 역동적인 움직임에서 힘과 속도를 떠올리지만, 내가 제주에서 본 말은 대개 조용히 서 있거나 풀을 뜯는 평온한 모습이었다. 나는 그 고요함 속에서 더욱 깊은 자유를 느낀다. 울타리 안에서 달리는 말이 정말 자유로운가? 그것은 오히려 벗어나려 몸부림치는 갈망처럼 보인다.
여백은 단순히 비어 있는 공간이 아니다. 감정을 담아내는 중요한 요소로서, 말과 자연이 조화를 이루며 자유의 본질을 드러낸다. 나는 그 여백 속에서 자유를 찾는다. 불필요한 색채나 요소가 개입되지 않기에, 말과 자연이 더욱 선명하게 드러난다. 그 여백 속에서 나는 내면의 자유와 고독을 마주하며, 온전히 나를 풀어낸다.
현실은 재갈과 고삐처럼 나를 옭아맨다. 작은 촌에서 융통성 없이, 자아 없이 살아가고 싶지 않다. 미술을 하며 안정적이지 않은 삶과 경제적 불안, 타인의 불신을 마주하지만, 적어도 이 순간만큼은 누군가의 고삐에 이끌리는 것이 아니라 온전히 나의 자아로 생각하고 표현한다.
제주의 익숙한 풍경은 때때로 나를 가두는 울타리처럼 느껴졌다. 더 넓은 세상을 향한 갈망과 현실의 제약 사이에서 끊임없이 고민했다. 내 작품 속 말들은 그 갈망을 담고 있다. 그것은 단순한 속도와 힘이 아니라, 자연 속에서 온전히 존재하는 자유에 대한 이야기다.
말은 오래전부터 인간과 친밀한 동물로 여겨져 왔다. 하지만 나는 인간의 개입 없이 온전히 존재하는 말의 모습에서 더 큰 울림을 느낀다. 재갈과 고삐가 없는 말처럼, 나 역시 미술을 통해 어떤 제약에도 얽매이지 않고 온전히 나의 생각을 표현하려 한다.
Monologue
The horse in my work symbolizes the freedom I long for. While many people associate the dynamic movement of horses with power and speed, the horses I saw in Jeju mostly stood quietly or grazed peacefully. In that stillness, I felt an even deeper sense of freedom. Is a horse running within a fence truly free? To me, it looks more like a desperate struggle to break free.
The empty space in my work is not simply a void. It is an important element that holds emotions, where horses and nature come together in harmony to reveal the essence of freedom. It is within that emptiness that I find freedom. With no unnecessary colors or elements intervening, the horses and nature emerge more clearly. In that space, I confront my inner freedom and solitude, and fully release myself.
Reality binds me like a bit and bridle. I do not want to live inflexibly and without self in a small village. While making art, I face an unstable life, financial insecurity, and the distrust of others. Yet, at least in this moment, I am not being led by anyone’s reins. I think and express myself purely through my own identity.
The familiar landscapes of Jeju sometimes felt like fences that confined me. I constantly struggled between my longing for a wider world and the constraints of reality. The horses in my work embody that yearning. It is not simply about speed and power, but a story of freedom that exists fully within nature.
Horses have long been considered close companions to humans. However, I feel a deeper resonance in the presence of a horse existing completely without human intervention. Like a horse without a bit and bridle, I too strive to express my thoughts freely through art, unbound by any limitations.
