Artist's Note.
저는 끊임없이 밀려오는 파도처럼 불안한 세상 속에서 이리저리 흔들리는 ‘자아’를 담아 그림을 그리고 있습니다.
‘above the waves’는 불안하고 힘없는 존재인 ‘아이’가 파도에 떠밀려 부유하다 수면 아래로 내려가 마음의 휴식을 찾는 이야기를 담고 있습니다.
잔잔할 일이 거의 없는 제주 바다의 파도는 마치 순순히 풀리지 않는 인생, 한치 앞도 보이지 않는 내 미래 같기도 했습니다. 깊이를 알 수 없이 일렁이는 파도는 위험하지만 바위에 부서지는 소리를 들으며 바라보면 마음이 편안해집니다.
바닷속은 숨을 쉴 수 없는 공간이지만 시끄러운 소리도, 어지러운 세상과도 차단되어 그야말로 나만의 세상이 펼쳐집니다. 그 공간만큼은 숨통이 트이는 곳이기에 해초와 땅 위의 식물이 어우러져 마치 숲과도 흡사한 편안함을 느낄 수 있는 공간입니다.
바다와 그 안에 존재하는 오브제들은 어린 시절을 떠오르게 하는 매개체이기도 합니다.
태어나면서부터 유년시절을 보냈던 50년 된 오래된 시골집, 해녀이자 농부셨던 할머니에게선 항상 바다내음과 흙내음이 느껴졌었습니다. 할머니가 물질을 하며 건져 올린 소라와 고동은 장난감이 되곤 했죠.
미래로 나아가면서 지칠 때면 찾게 되는 건 과거의 추억이 아닐까요. 과거의 따뜻했던 추억을 떠올리는 것만으로도 위안이 될 때가 있습니다.
그림을 보시는 분들도 지친 마음을 쉬게 만드는 것이 무엇인지, 마음의 안식처를 한번쯤 떠올려 보셨으면 좋겠습니다.

I create paintings that capture the image of a "self" that sways back and forth in an uncertain world, much like waves that relentlessly roll in.
"Above the Waves" tells the story of a fragile and anxious child who, after being swept away by the waves, descends beneath the surface to find peace of mind.
The waves of Jeju’s sea, which are rarely calm, remind me of a life that never unfolds smoothly and a future I cannot foresee. The undulating waves, whose depths are unknown, may seem dangerous, yet when I watch them crash against the rocks, their sound brings me comfort.
Although the ocean is a place where one cannot breathe, it is also a world of my own—shielded from noise and the chaos of life. In that space, I can finally breathe. The underwater world, where seaweed intertwines with plants from the land, feels much like a tranquil forest, offering a deep sense of comfort.
The sea and the objects within it serve as vessels that evoke memories of my childhood.
I was born and raised in an old countryside house that stood for 50 years. My grandmother, both a haenyeo (female diver) and a farmer, always carried the scent of the sea and soil. The conches and whelks she retrieved from her dives would often become my toys.
Perhaps when we grow weary of moving forward, it is the memories of our past that we seek. Sometimes, simply recalling those warm memories provides comfort.
I hope that those who view my paintings will also take a moment to think about what brings them peace and where their own sanctuary lies.
