Artist's Note.

〈빛, 감정, 기억의 층위로 구성된 내면의 풍경〉

나의 작업은 사람과의 관계 속에서 경험한 감정과 그에 따라 축적된 기억들을 다시 들여다보는 데에서 출발한다.

일상 속에서 마주하는 감정의 진폭은 과거의 특정 장면들을 현재의 시점에서 다시 떠올리게 하며,

그 기억은 고정된 과거가 아닌 현재의 감정에 따라 새롭게 구성되고 의미화되는 유동적인 구조로 작용한다.

나는 이러한 감정과 기억의 흐름을 ‘선’, ‘색’, ‘빛의 자리’, 그리고 ‘빛’이라는 회화적 언어를 통해 화면 위에 축적해 나간다.

작업에 반복적으로 등장하는 바다, 윤슬, 그리고 빛은 기억과 감정을 환기시키는 주요한 시각적 상징이다.

바다는 억눌린 감정을 흘려보내는 공간이며, 윤슬은 그 감정이 떠오르는 순간의 미세한 떨림을 담아낸다.

그리고 그 위에 머무는 빛은 지금 이 순간을 살아가고 있다는 존재의 자각을 가능하게 하는 시작점이자 정서적 중심으로 작동한다.

나는 수많은 선들을 반복적으로 화면에 채워 나가는 과정을 통해 삶의 선택과 감정의 흔적을 시각화하고자 한다.

이 선들은 감정과 기억, 그리고 존재가 교차하는 시간의 층위를 이루며, 회화는 나에게 복잡한 내면의 감정들을 정리하고 스스로를 응시하는 하나의 수행적 도구가 된다.

나의 작업은 결국 기억을 되짚고 감정을 표현하는 조형적 시도이자, 그 과정을 통해 내면을 다독이고 회복하는 치유의 시간이다.

누군가가 나의 그림 앞에서 자신의 감정이나 기억을 떠올리며 잠시 멈추고 조용한 울림을 느낀다면, 그것이 바로 내가 이 작업을 지속해 나가는 가장 근본적인 이유이자 의미일 것이다.

〈An Inner Landscape Composed of Layers of Light, Emotion, and Memory〉

My work begins with revisiting the emotions I have experienced through relationships with others and the memories accumulated through those emotions.

The fluctuations of emotion encountered in daily life often bring past scenes back into the present, and those memories do not remain fixed in the past. Instead, they are fluid structures that are continuously reconstructed and re-signified through the lens of present emotions.

I translate the flow of these emotions and memories onto the canvas using the painterly languages of ‘lines,’ ‘colors,’ ‘places of light,’ and ‘light’ itself.

Recurring elements in my work—such as the sea, the shimmering surface of water (known as yoonseul in Korean), and light—serve as visual symbols that evoke memory and emotion.

The sea becomes a space where repressed emotions are released. The shimmering light on its surface captures the subtle tremors of those emotions as they rise. And the light resting upon it serves as both a point of departure and an emotional anchor, allowing for a heightened awareness of being present in this very moment.

Through the repetitive act of layering countless lines across the canvas, I attempt to visualize the traces of emotional experiences and life’s choices. These lines form strata of time where emotion, memory, and existence intersect. For me, painting becomes a meditative process—a way to organize complex inner feelings and gaze inward.

Ultimately, my work is a visual attempt to retrace memory and express emotion. Through this process, it becomes a time for healing, for comforting the self.

If someone stands before my work and, even for a brief moment, recalls their own emotions or memories, feeling a quiet resonance within—then that is the most fundamental reason and meaning behind why I continue to create.
