Artist's Note.
‘Dreamlike Realism(몽환적 리얼리즘)’은 김명진 작가가 구축한 회화적 세계관으로, 현실적인 형상 묘사 위에 감정, 기억, 상상, 무의식의 흐름을 겹겹이 덧입힌 시각 언어이다.
작가는 서양화 재료를 바탕으로 작업하지만, 그 근간에는 동양적 정서와 미학적 사유가 깊이 스며들어 있다.
그녀의 작업에서 리얼리즘은 외형을 그대로 재현하는 것이 아니라, 현실을 매개로 감정을 시각화하는 틀이 된다.
마치 꿈결처럼 은은하고 서정적인 분위기 속에서 관람자는 각자의 내면을 마주하고, 작품 속 장면에 자신을 투영하게 된다.
이 회화 세계는 사실주의의 묘사력, 상징주의의 감성, 초현실주의의 무의식적 이미지, 그리고 동양 회화의 여백과 정서를 모두 품고 있다.
작가는 그 흐름 속에서 ‘보이는 것’과 ‘느껴지는 것’ 사이의 감정적 진실을 포착하고자 한다. 특히 동양화의 핵심인 여백의 미는 김명진 작가의 화면에서 중요한 구성 요소이다.

‘달’은 무의식의 빛이자 감정의 거울이며, ‘정원’은 마음의 정처, 자아가 머무는 상상적 공간이다. 등장 인물의 뒷모습은 자아를 앞세우기보다 내면을 지향하고 자연과 융화되는 동양적 자아 인식을 드러낸다.
그녀의 작품은 결국 “그리는 것”이 아니라 “느끼게 하는 것”, “보여주는 것”이 아니라 “머물게 하는 것”이다.
감정과 자연, 내면의 흐름이 조화를 이루는 사유적 풍경을 통해, 김명진 작가는 오늘날 현대인이 잃어버린 감정의 쉼을 회복하는 시각적 명상을 제안하고 있다.
Dreamlike Realism은 서양의 표현 방식과 동양의 정신성을 잇는 감성과 철학이 공존하는 회화적 다리이며, 김명진 작가만의 고유한 예술 언어로 자리잡고 있다.

“Dreamlike Realism” is the pictorial universe constructed by artist Myungjin Kim, where realistic depictions of forms are layered with emotions, memories, imagination, and the subconscious.
While she primarily works with materials and techniques of Western painting, the foundation of her work is deeply infused with Eastern sentiment and aesthetic thought.
In her practice, realism is not about replicating appearances, but about creating a framework to visualize emotional experiences through the medium of reality.
Like a dream—subtle and lyrical—her work invites viewers to confront their own inner worlds and see themselves reflected in the scenes she paints.
This pictorial language embodies the technical precision of realism, the emotional depth of symbolism, the unconscious imagery of surrealism,
and the spiritual aesthetics and spatial poetics of traditional East Asian painting.
Within this flow, the artist seeks to capture the emotional truth between what is “seen” and what is “felt.”
Notably, the “beauty of empty space” (여백의 미)—a core concept in Eastern painting—is a vital compositional element in Kim’s work.
Here, emptiness is not merely a void, but a temporal gap where emotions dwell and contemplation flows.
It becomes a medium that invites the viewer to pause, gaze, and quietly encounter their own interior landscapes.
Recurring motifs in her work—the moon, gardens, animals, and figures shown from behind—are all deeply connected to Eastern symbolism.
The moon serves as a light of the unconscious and a mirror of emotion. The garden is an imaginary sanctuary of the self—a place of rest for the mind.
Figures viewed from behind reflect an Eastern concept of self that is inward-looking and harmonized with nature, rather than asserting itself outwardly.
Ultimately, her art is not about “drawing” but about “making one feel,” not about “showing” but about “inviting one to stay.”
Through contemplative landscapes where emotion, nature, and the inner self coexist in harmony, Kim proposes a kind of visual meditation—a restoration of emotional rest for the modern soul.
