Artist's Note.
체계는 어떠한 제한이나 규정으로부터 그것을 따르는 일반적인 형태보다는 반복된 과정을 통해 발생한다. 또한, 반복된 과정을 통해 스스로 유지와 변화를 선택하는 자율적인 체계이다.
즉, 체계는 스스로 반복된 과정으로부터 발생한 동일성과 재생성의 과정으로부터 발생한 차이를 포함한 변이를 수용하는 진화적인 질서인 셈이다.
체계의 생성 과정은 ‘오토포이에시스(Autopoiesis)’ 이론으로도 설명이 가능하다.
오토포이에시스란 생물학자인 움베르또 마뚜라나(Humberto R. Maturana)와 프란시스코 바렐라(Francisco J. Varela)에 의해서 고안된 그리스어로 스스로를 의미하는 ‘아우토스(autos = αυτός)’와
아리스토텔레스의 생산과 제작의 기술적인 개념을 의미하는 ‘포이에시스(poiesis = ποιείν)’를 결합한 어원이다.
이 이론은 인간을 포함한 모든 생명체는 자기 스스로 생성하여 반복된 과정을 통해 생명을 유지하고, 스스로를 창조한다는 개념이다.
또한, 오토포이에시스는 생명체와 자연뿐만 아니라 사회를 이루는 모든 영역에서 체계를 이루는 과정을 포함할 수 있다.
나의 회화는 체계적 회화로써 체계의 생성 과정에서 발생하는 유지를 통한 동일성과 차이에 따른 변이적인 형태를 이미지로 구현하는 ‘자기생성회화(autopoiesis painting)’라고 칭하고자 한다.
생물학에서 출발한 오토포이에시스는 생명체의 체계를 설명하듯이 인간, 개개인의 삶의 체계와 같다.
인간의 삶은 자기 스스로 만들어 가는 유일한 활동이며, 스스로 유지와 변화를 선택함으로써 자신만의 삶의 체계를 생성한다.
또한, 개개인의 삶은 다양한 인간과 사회, 환경의 유기적인 관계를 통해 이루어진다.
특히, 인간과의 관계는 다양한 상호작용을 통해 이루어지는데, 정확한 수치와 경계로 표현할 수 없다.
그렇지만 대부분의 인간관계는 눈에 드러나지 않지만 나름의 계산적인 면이 있다고 생각한다.
일반적으로 계산적인 사람은 대부분 싫어하거나 지나치다고 인식하지만, 인간 모두는 자기 나름의 방식으로 경계와 관계를 구분하고 있지 않은가?
나는 이러한 경계와 관계를 정확한 수치로써 규칙과 불규칙, 동일성과 차이를 이미지로 형상화한다.
그것은 인간이 나름의 삶의 체계를 생성하는 과정으로써 관계의 크기, 길이, 간격, 굵기, 방향 등을 설정한다.
즉, 개개인의 삶의 체계는 자기 스스로 경계와 방식으로부터 생성하며, 유기적인 관계의 유지와 변이적인 요소를 통해 진화하는 고유한 질서이다.
이처럼 인간을 포함한 자연과 사회의 모든 체계는 어떠한 하나의 규정에 머물러 있지 않다.
체계는 1+1=2 라는 법칙과는 다르게 어떠한 환경이나 상황에 따라 유지와 변화를 조절한다.
또한, 생성된 체계는 또 다른 새로움을 수용하면서 변이를 일으키며 진화를 선택함으로써 그에 맞는 새로운 체계를 생성한다.
이러한 체계의 생성은 끊임없이 반복적인 진화의 과정을 구현한다.
나의 ‘자기생성회화(autopoiesis painting)’은 인간을 포함하고, 사회를 구성하는 모든 영역의 고유한 체계가 존재하듯이
선, 점, 색, 면, 형, 수 등의 체계로 나누어 다양한 영역의 체계의 생성 과정을 창조하고자 한다.
Autopoiesis Painting – A System of Self-Generated Order
A system is not merely a product of imposed regulations or limitations; rather, it emerges through repeated processes.
These iterations allow the system to autonomously maintain and alter itself—choosing both preservation and transformation.
In this sense, a system embraces sameness born of repetition and difference born of regeneration.
It is an evolving form of order—one that inherently accommodates variation.
The process of system formation can be understood through the theory of Autopoiesis, a concept developed by biologists Humberto R.
Maturana and Francisco J. Varela. The term originates from the Greek words autos (αυτός), meaning “self,” and poiesis (ποιείν), referring to “production” or “creation,” a concept rooted in Aristotelian thought.
Autopoiesis posits that all living organisms, including humans, are self-producing entities.
They maintain life through cycles of repetition and evolve through self-creation.
Furthermore, the concept extends beyond biology—it also describes the formation of systems within nature, society, and human behavior.
My painting practice seeks to visualize these systemic processes.
I refer to it as Autopoiesis Painting: a system-oriented form of painting that expresses both continuity and variation through visual language.
It reflects the ongoing dynamics of creation, maintenance, and transformation that shape living systems.
Just as the theory of autopoiesis explains biological systems, it also mirrors the systems that compose human life.
Every individual crafts their own unique system of existence, maintaining or altering it by choice.
These systems are not isolated; they are formed through complex, organic relationships with others, society, and the environment.
Human relationships, in particular, are built through interactions that cannot be measured with precise numbers or boundaries.
Yet even the most seemingly intuitive connections have a degree of calculated structure.
Though society may criticize "calculating" behavior, in truth, all people define and navigate their relationships through internal rules—distinguishing between connection and separation in personal ways.
In my work, I render these abstract relationships using measurable elements: rules and irregularities, repetition and difference.
The scale, length, spacing, thickness, and direction of forms all serve as metaphors for how people construct their lives
—each person generating a unique order through their own boundaries and relationships.
Thus, every human life, like every natural or social structure, constitutes a distinct system.
These systems are not static; they do not conform to fixed equations like 1 + 1 = 2. Instead, they adjust
—responding to environments and circumstances, choosing when to maintain or transform. As systems evolve,
they absorb novelty, generate variation, and give rise to entirely new orders. This is the essence of an ongoing, iterative evolution.
My Autopoiesis Painting aims to creatively reconstruct the formation of these systems through the visual elements of line, point, color, surface, shape, and number.
Each element functions as part of a broader language—a means to express how diverse domains of life and thought continuously build and rebuild their own self-generated systems.
