Wonderland : 행복하고 호기심 가득한 꿈의 세계
반짝이는 소녀의 눈망울, 어렴풋한 기억속의 동화에 나올 법한 호기심 넘치는 익살맞은 표정의 귀여운 몬스터 친구들, 귀부터 발끝까지 몽글몽글 동그란 럭키베어의 작업까지,
WONDERLAND 속에는 캔디 같이 달콤한 희망과 꿈의 서사가 담겨있다.
이는 혼탁한 세상을 투명하게 바꾸는 기분좋은 색들과 어우러져 우리를 사랑과 행복이 가득한 유토피아로 인도하며 각자 느끼는 어린 시절의 경험을 자화상으로 삼는 동시에
스스로를 가장 예쁘고 가장 순수한 시절로 타임슬립 시키는 기능을 한다.
WONDERLAND 속의 행복한 꿈과 즐거운 호기심들은 다양하고 비비드한 컬러들과 날카로운 칼로 표현된 스크래치를 통하여 화려하면서도 집요한 느낌으로 표현된다.
이는 막연하지만 무한하게 밀려오는 미지의 세계 속에 잠식되어 가는 삶을 기억하고 새기는 과정이자, 일상을 잠시 멈추고 쉬어가게 하는 행위이다.
어쩌면 조금은 차갑고 바쁘게 돌아가는 사회속에서 스스로를 보호하기 위해 행하는 무의식적 반복행위 같기도 하고, 모두가 행복한 유토피아 같은 세상을 향한 이루어질 수 없는 꿈을 향한 염원 같기도 하다.
스크래치 과정을 위해 나무판 위에 반복된 레이어를 쌓아가며 직접 제작하는 캔버스 공정부터 물감을 수차례 얇게 덧칠하여 만들어낸 매끈하고 균일한 표면과 색감,
그 위를 오가며 수없이 쌓아가는 치밀한 스크래치 과정은 하나의 수행에 가깝다.
수없이 많은 섬세한 스크래치의 반복을 통해 마침내 다양한 패턴을 이루는 선들과 그 조합이 만들어내는 이미지들은 서로 반응하며 독특한 울림을 만든다.
시간과 공간, 기억을 담은 하나의 흔적 혹은 상처들은 서로 어울려 눈부시게 빛나기도 하고 우주 속 무언가와 같은 패턴을 이루기도 한다.
이는 마치 정돈되고 아름다워 보이는 오늘날의 세상을 각자의 시간과 공간 속에서 치열하게 살아가는 우리의 모습 같기도 하다.
이러한 과정의 스크래치들은 우리의 기억을 품고 있는 천진한 이미지들(재미있는 표정의 몬스터들, 행복한 얼굴의 소녀,
보기만 해도 미소짓게 되는 오브제)과 어우러지며 우리의 삶에 작고 기분 좋은 균열을 만들며 각자의 행복했던 동심 속 꿈을 기억하게 한다.
Wonderland: A World of Joyful Curiosity and Dreams
In Wonderland, sparkling eyes of girls, mischievous and curious expressions of cute monster friends straight out of faint childhood fairy tales, and the round,
soft shapes of Lucky Bear’s work—from head to toe—all come together to create a whimsical universe.
Within this world, there is a narrative of hope and dreams as sweet as candy.
The vibrant colors transform the chaotic reality into a transparent, joyful utopia, guiding us into a space filled with love and happiness.
At the same time, it acts as a mirror for our childhood experiences, allowing us to time-slip back to the most beautiful and pure moments of our past.
The happiness and playful curiosity in Wonderland are expressed through vivid, diverse colors and sharp scratches, creating images that are both dazzling and meticulous.
This process reflects a way to capture and remember a life gradually consumed by the vast, unknown, while also providing a pause from everyday routines—a moment to rest and breathe.
Perhaps these repeated acts resemble unconscious protective rituals in a fast-paced, sometimes harsh society, or maybe they are a longing for an unattainable utopia, a dream of a world where everyone can be happy.
The canvas itself is carefully crafted: layers of paint are repeatedly applied to wooden panels to create a smooth and uniform surface.
The intricate scratching process, performed again and again, becomes a meditative practice.
Through countless delicate scratches, patterns emerge, and their interactions form a unique resonance.
Marks and traces holding memories of time and space sometimes shine brightly, at other times forming patterns reminiscent of the cosmos.
This can be seen as a reflection of our lives—living intensely in our own time and space while striving to create order and beauty in the world around us.
These scratched surfaces, combined with innocent, memory-filled images—playful monsters, joyful girls, objects that naturally bring a smile—create small, pleasant fractures in our lives.
They remind us of the dreams and happiness of our childhood, allowing us to reconnect with the wonder and delight we once felt.

동심세계로의 귀환, Wonderful-Colorful-Beautiful!!

블링블링한 소녀의 눈망울, 호기심 넘치는 몬스터 친구들의 얄궂은 표정, 귀부터 발끝까지 몽글몽글 동그란 곰돌이의 작업까지,
이사라 작가의 WONDERLAND 속에는 캔디 같이 달콤한 희망과 꿈의 서사가 담겨있다.
작가만의 캐릭터와 혼탁한 세상을 투명하게 바꾸는 ‘이사라의 색’은 과하지 않은 적절한 균형 속에서 우리를 사랑과 행복이 가득한 유토피아로 인도한다.
진채(眞彩)를 쓰지 않는 독특한 명·채도 속에는 ‘담담한 감성의 색(淡彩=맑디맑은 채색)’으로 세상을 중화시키는 조화의 심상이 녹아있다.
"욕심보다 희망을, 결핍보다 사랑을” 주는 명랑소녀시리즈엔 정해진 제목이 없다.
각자 느끼는 어린 시절의 경험을 자화상으로 삼는 샤이니 한 작업들은 가장 예쁘고 가장 순수한 시절로 타임슬립(Time Slip) 시키는 기능을 한다.
이사라의 동심미감은 대중만화 속 요술봉을 품에 안고 잠든 ‘Wonderful Land(어린 시절의 서사)’를,
파스텔조의 아름드리 색으로 우리의 마음을 치유하는 ‘Colorful World(중화와 균형의 네트워크)’를,
요시토모 나라의 풍자적 자유를 뛰어넘는 ‘Beautiful Life(긍정과 유희의 미학)를 실천한다.
우리가 앞으로 경험할 이사라의 ‘원더랜드’는 디즈니랜드와 팀버튼의 상상력을 가로지른 ‘Wonderful-Colorful-Beautiful Dream’의 실현이 아닐까.
꿈꾸는 것이 가능하다면 그 꿈을 실현하는 것 또한 가능하기 때문이다.
문학적서사+네오팝의 융합적 세계관

올해 초 부산을 강타한 무라카미 다카시 <무라카미좀비> 열풍은 ‘현대미술계에서 가장 비싼 아시아의 워홀’이라는 세계관 뒤에 일본 아니메의 감화를 보여준 #슈퍼플랫 #오타쿠문화 #일본신화적상상력 등이 결합했기 때문이다.
캐릭터를 가진 네오팝 계열의 작품들이 단순한 대중문화의 나열이라는 판단은, 순수회화의 엘리트이즘을 오독(誤讀; 잘못번역)한 선입견 때문이다.
실제로 이사라 작가는 네오팝 계열의 외연을 가졌지만, 독특한 스토리텔링의 극적요소는 현대연극의 선구자인 조부 이해랑 선생(1916~1989)을, 집요한 노동집약적 완전성은 극사실회화의 독보적 대가인 부친 이석주 화백의 영향을 받았다.
귀엽고 아기자기한 캐릭터의 외연에서 동시대 보편성을 획득한 작가는 내연에 동양 전통의 상징성을 숨기는 ‘이중의 내러티브’를 선보인다.
석굴암을 지키는 금강역사상이 악으로부터 중생을 보호한다는 의미를 갖듯이, ‘#몬스터시리즈’는 악(惡)한 현실을 락(樂: 풍류적 스마일)으로 바꾸는 ‘국면전환’의 캐릭터이다.
고집불통의 얄궂은 표정들은 어둡기는커녕 팬시한 캐릭터로 거듭난 ‘화이트 유머’를 탑재했다.
귀엽고 개성 있는 무명(無名)소녀를 뒷받침하는 세계관은 긍정의 깨달음으로 원더랜드행 티켓을 소지한 우리 모두를 위한 수호신으로 작용한다.
소녀의 순수를 비교/대조하는 조연급 매개체로서 ‘현실의 잔혹함-고독과 이를 정면승부’하는 ‘극복의 캐릭터’로 기능하는 것이다.
반면 ‘#럭키베어’ 시리즈는 동그란 순환과 원형의 세계관을 ‘귀여움 뽀작’ 같은 언어의 다락방에 숨겨두어 보는 것만으로도 ‘내면의 순수’로 들어가게 만든다.
편집증적 완성도로 단 한 개의 동일한 작품도 만들지 않는 작가정신은 ‘곰돌이’의 뒷면과 밑바닥까지 정교한 완전성을 탑재하는 아날로그 미감의 정수를 보여준다.
이제 남은 것은 ‘무명소녀의 활약’이다. 세상에 태어난 순수한 소녀는 ‘자신의 공간-원더랜드‘을 탐색하면서, 캐릭터 친구들과 손에 손을 맞잡고 ‘내 자신을 발견하는 아이덴티티’로의 성장을 노래한다. 실제로 원더랜드로 들어가기 위해서는 트윙글한 소녀의 눈과 접선하거나, 파스텔조의 색채를 링크해 무한한 색의 에너지로 빨려 들어가는 몰입경험이 필수적이다. 작가는 행동과 의식을 통합을 '보편적이고 대중적인 캐릭터 미감'으로 전화(轉化)시킴으로써, 현실의 흐름을 작품과 연동시키는 '명상-몰입형 캐릭터 시리즈'를 선보이는 것이다. 반짝이는 당신에게 위로와 희망을 선보이는 작업들 속에는 이사라를 허브로 연결한 동심 세계의 네트워크가 ‘마법 같은 주문’이 되어 존재한다. “Shining Shining Little Girl~ Welcome to Wonderful~ Colorful~ Beautiful Land”

The glittering eyes of a little girl, the mischievous expressions of curious monster friends, and the round, soft form of the bear that seems fluffy from ears to toes —
In Isara’s WONDERLAND, there unfolds a sweet narrative of hope and dreams, like candy dissolving gently on the tongue.
Through her distinctive characters and her unique sense of color that seems to purify the chaos of the world, Isara leads us into a utopia filled with love and happiness.
Her palette, which avoids the use of vivid “true colors (眞彩),” embraces instead the calm tonality of “light colors of tenderness (淡彩)” — hues that soothe and harmonize rather than dazzle.
Her Cheerful Girl Series, embodying the motto “More hope than greed, more love than lack,” has no fixed title.
Each work invites the viewer to project their own childhood memories, acting as a shimmering mirror that allows a “time slip” back to the most beautiful and pure moments of life.
Isara’s aesthetics of innocence realizes a Wonderful Land that holds the fairytale narrative of childhood,
a Colorful World where pastel hues heal our hearts through harmony and balance,
and a Beautiful Life that transcends Yoshitomo Nara’s satirical freedom to embody the aesthetics of positivity and playfulness.
The WONDERLAND we will soon encounter through Isara’s imagination might be the realization of a “Wonderful–Colorful–Beautiful Dream,”
a realm that bridges the imagination of Disney and the fantasy of Tim Burton.
If dreaming is possible, then surely realizing that dream must be possible too.

The Takashi Murakami exhibition Murakami Zombie, which recently swept through Busan, demonstrated how the influence of Japanese anime culture—
Superflat, Otaku aesthetics, and mythological imagination—could merge with a contemporary art worldview often described as “the most expensive Asian Warhol.”
To dismiss neo-pop works with characters as mere accumulations of popular culture is to misread (誤讀) the elitism of so-called “pure painting.”
In truth, Isara’s work extends the form of neo-pop outward, but within it lies the dramatic sensibility of storytelling inherited from her grandfather,
Lee Hae-rang (1916–1989), a pioneer of modern Korean theater,
and the meticulous, labor-intensive perfectionism learned from her father, Lee Seok-joo, a master of hyperrealist painting.
From the charming and delicate outer appearance of her characters, the artist achieves a sense of universal contemporaneity,
while embedding beneath the surface layer a hidden symbolism of Eastern tradition — an “inner narrative within a narrative.”
Just as the Vajra guardians of Seokguram protect humanity from evil,
Isara’s Monster Series transforms the harshness of reality (evil, 惡) into pleasure and laughter (樂) — a cheerful reversal of circumstances.
Their stubborn, mischievous faces are anything but dark; rather, they embody “white humor,” reborn as delightful, fancy characters.
Supporting the anonymous little girl at the heart of her world, these characters serve as guardians for all of us — holders of a “ticket to WONDERLAND,” where enlightenment through positivity awaits.
Acting as both contrast and companion to the girl’s purity, they stand as mediators confronting the cruelty and loneliness of reality — the characters of transcendence.
Meanwhile, the Lucky Bear Series conceals a philosophy of cyclical wholeness within its round form —
a “tiny attic of cuteness” where viewers can rediscover their own inner innocence.
With an obsessive perfectionism that refuses repetition, Isara’s craftsmanship is revealed even in the unseen surfaces
— the back and underside of the bear — manifesting the essence of analog beauty.
What remains now is the “journey of the nameless girl.”
Born into the world in purity, she wanders through her own space — WONDERLAND —
joining hands with her character companions, singing a song of self-discovery and identity.
To enter her WONDERLAND, one must encounter the twinkle in the girl’s eyes,
or be drawn into the infinite energy of pastel hues — a meditative immersion that connects action and awareness.
By transforming these experiences into a universal and popular character aesthetic,
Isara synchronizes the flow of reality with the rhythm of her art, presenting a “meditative–immersive character series.”
In these radiant works that offer comfort and hope to the viewer,
there exists a magical network of innocent dreams, all connected through Isara herself —
a spell woven softly through color, memory, and imagination.
