Artist's Note.
고뇌는 무겁고
무아는 거창하며
수행하듯은 어림없다.
보는 눈이 그랬다면 감사한 일이지만
하는 몸은 아직 그곳에 다다르지 못한다.
그저
애정으로 나무를 관찰하고
직관으로 판단하며
시간의 결핍과 근력의 아쉬움 속에
자발적 노예처럼 움직였을 뿐
예술적 표현에 대한 의도적 개념을 품지 않으며
예술을 대하는 태도와 숨겨진 시간에 개념을 담는다.
그저 작업하다 보면 집중과 잡념 사이, 허무와 희망 사이 뭔가가 떠다니고
그중 하나 잡아 적으면 그걸 개념이라 해도 좋고 굳이 입으로 전달하면 작업철학이라 해도 되겠다.
오랜 시간 단순 작업을 하다 보면
그것은 오고야만다.
Agony is heavy,
and self-effacement is grand,
yet to practice as if in training is far from enough.
If the observing eye saw it so, I am grateful,
but the working body has yet to reach that place.
I simply
watched the wood with affection,
judged with intuition,
and moved like a voluntary slave
amid the lack of time and the longing for strength—
harboring no deliberate concept of artistic expression,
but placing meaning in the attitude toward art
and in the hidden hours behind it.
As I work, something drifts between focus and distraction,
between futility and hope;
if I catch one and write it down, perhaps that may be called a concept,
and if I choose to speak it aloud, it may as well be called a work philosophy.
After long hours of simple labor,
it inevitably comes.
