Artist's Note.
서양 전통의 상징이라 할 수 있는 디즈니의 대표적인 캐릭터들과, 한국 전통의 상징이라 할 수 있는 고전 민화 '십장생'을 어우러지게 하려는 의도를 갖고 작업을 한 결과, 작품은 우리의 전통을 배경으로 서양의 전통이 생동감 있게 공존하는 모습으로 완성되었다. 작가의 목표는 동서양의 융합, 더 나아가서는 '세계화'라는 역사적인 주제들을 표현하는 것이다. 이 안에서 외견상의 대조적인 요소들 뿐 이나라 역사적인 '주제'들 까지도 조화롭게 표현하고자 한다. 이에 팝아트적인 감성을 가미하여 작품을 즐겁고 편하게 볼 수 있도록 함으로써 관객들에게 좀 더 매력적으로 다가가고 싶다는 것이 작가의 이야기다.
In my artistic endeavor, I merged Disney's iconic characters, symbolizing the Western tradition, with the classical Korean folk painting of "Sipjangsaeng." The artwork portrays a lively coexistence of these elements within the backdrop of our traditional folk painting landscape. By intertwining contemporary and historical themes, as well as seemingly contrasting elements such as globalization and the fusion of East and West, my aim was to achieve harmony within apparent discord. I aspire to make our diminishing traditional folk painting more captivating and accessible to today's audience by presenting it in an enjoyable and approachable manner, infused with a pop art sensibility.
